The Vikings play again on Thursday at Joplin.

There’s No I in Team…

But there is one in “Tim.” Just kidding, of course, but KSPR/ABC Channel 33 News named Griffin the “Athlete of the Week” and did a nice story with interviews of both him and Coach Nurnberg. The video was shown on Thursday night’s newscast, but you can check it out here if you missed it.

Congratulations to Tim. Well deserved.

Parkview Has Win-Streak Broken

September 23rd, 2008 by Florez No comments »

The Viking Varsity squad lost to Kickapoo 2-0 on Tuesday night, putting them at 6-2 on the season. Minus regular starter Leland Eckstam, Parkview was able to possess the ball well in the first half. In the second minute of the match Tim Griffin received a pass from Morgan Holt into space and Ryan Moses ran him down in the box. Another quick chance game in the 8th minute of the game when Jared Moore beat his defender to the touchline and crossed the ball to Griffin, who struck it just wide. Just five minutes later Moore flicked a ball on to Griffin, who made a beautiful run and then played the ball to Holt, who was able to get a blistering volley off that went just wide of the far post. Chris Tombridge had a great first half for the Chiefs in goal, playing aggressive and showing no fear coming off of his line. In the 20th minute Darren Shaw won a 50/50 ball, played a great ball into space for Matt Medley. Medley beat a defender and crossed a ball to the onrushing Jordan Houseman who headed it just over the bar. Late in the first half the Vikings got another great look when Morgan Holt smashed a ball far post forcing a diving save from Chris Tombridge. In the 34th minute Ryan Moses fouled Tim Griffin outside the box. Matt Medley lined up the opportunity and put it off the crossbar. Malter made a great save in goal at the 37th minute mark when Skylar Russell hit a ball from outside the box and Malter tipped it over the top.

The second half was a different story as the Chiefs got the better of possession and opportunites early on. In the 44th minute Kickapoo broke through when a ball was played into the box and it came back off the left post into the box to an onrushing Lane Chapman, who deposited it easily into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. In the 57th minute off a free kick Ian Kennedy was taken down in the box and a penalty kick was rightly called, and Kennedy put the PK away for a 2-0 final score. Parkview continued to press and in the 71st minute Matt Medley received a nice ball from Tim Griffin and put it just over the crossbar. Malter made a spectacular save for the Vikings in the 76th minute when Ryan Moses smashed a ball from about 20 far post and Malter was forced to dive full extension to put the ball out of play. In the 77th minute Tim Griffin received a ball into space from Morgan Holt and struck the ball far post, but Chris Tombridge dove and tipped the ball just wide. xx x xxxxxxx xxxx xxxx xx xxx xxxxx, xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxx xxxxx, xxxxxxx xxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxxx xxx xxxxxxx xxx xxxxxx xx xxxxx xx xx. The match was a hard fought battle that saw multiple yellow cards, a large showing of fans from both sides that were quite engaged in the game, and coaches who popped off the bench more than once to make a point. This loss drops the Vikings to a still impressive 6-2 after winning 6 straight before Tuesday.

After going down 2-0 in the first half, the Junior Varsity Vikings made a brilliant comeback to tie the game at 2-2. Miscommunication on the back line cost Parkview both goals that they gave up, as players were allowed to run through the defense unmarked, and the Chiefs capitalized on the opportunities. Late in the first half a throw-in found Brian Otradovec, who pushed the ball away from the defender marking his dominate right foot, and struck a left-footed shot that found the back of the net for a 2-1 score. The Vikings continued to attack the goal in the second half, and the defense showed no lasting effects from the first half as they gathered themselves and played a strong second half. Otradovec was able to pick up a loose ball in the box late in the first half and poke it in for the 2-2 tie. The Vikings had a few more opportunities as the last few minutes ticked off the clock, but played conservatively as well in order to secure at least a tie on the Chiefs’ home field.

3rd Round
Parkview 7, Hannibal 0 (First/Second Place Game)

Parkview scored early and often on route to a 7-0 victory and first place in the ‘Viking Showdown.’ The Vikings started off the championship game in style with a penalty kick in the 2nd minute of the match when Tim Griffin was taken down inside the box and finished the penalty kick for the 1-0 lead. Five minutes later Griffin got his second of the match when Morgan Holt played a forty yard ball from a set piece in the middle of the field and Tim volleyed it into the back of the neck. In the 26th minute Alex Blanco sent Jared Moore into space, thirty five yards of it, and Moore slotted the ball far post alone against the keeper to make the lead 3-0. Tim Griffin netted his third hat trick of the season in the 49th minute when Morgan Holt sent him a ball that left him alone with the keeper. Tim calmly dribbled the ball back from the keeper and finished easily. Tim Griffin returned the favor in the 51st minute when he put a nice cross from the left flank right on Morgan Holt’s head and Holt headed it into the upper 90 for a 5-0 Parkview lead. A few minutes later Griffin beat a defender on the touchline and passed the ball back to Leland Ekstam who finished with a nice strike. The final goal of the night occurred when Jared Moore released a nice ball into space for Jordan Housemann who split two defenders. The defenders took him down in the box and Justin Hansen stepped up and buried the penalty kick in the upper ninety for a 7-0 final score. Jonathan Malter and the defense pitched a shutout, with Malter coming up with one save in each half.

Scoring Summary: Tim Griffin (PK), Tim Griffin (assisted by Morgan Holt), Jared Moore (assisted by Alex Blanco), Tim Griffin (assisted by Morgan Holt), Morgan Holt (assisted by Tim Griffin), Leland Ekstam (assisted by Tim Griffin), Justin Hansen (PK).

Lebanon 3, Neosho 2

2nd Round
Parkview 3, Carthage 1

The Vikings came out strong but were unable to get many scoring opportunities against Carthage in the second match of the day for both teams. Parkview was awarded a free kick a few steps outside the box and Matt Medley curved the ball into the near post to beat the keeper and get the Vikings a 1-0 lead. The second goal also came from Medley on a set piece, as the kick was awarded in a similar area and it looked like deja-vu all over again until Medley this time went low to the far post for a 2-0 lead. In the second half Jordan Houseman played a ball far post that snuck in and beat the keeper for an unassisted goal (his first career varsity goal) that left the final score a 3-0 Viking win.

Scoring Summary: Matt Medley (unassisted), Matt Medley (unassisted), Jordan Houseman (unassisted).

1st Round
Parkview 6, Lebanon 1

Parkview started the Shootout with a bang, beating Lebanon 6-1 in a game marred by a long lightning delay. Matt Medley had a phenomenal night, scoring two goals and adding two assists. He opened the scoring with a left-footed shot into the side netting after splitting three defenders in the 4th minute. Tim Griffin received a nice ball from Darren Shaw and turned his defender deftly, slotting the ball far post pas the keeper. Matt Medley scored his second again unassisted, winning a fifty-fifty ball and dribbling a defender before sinking the shot for a 3-0 Parkview lead. Darren Shaw got his first goal of the year in the 36th minute when Matt Medley fed him the ball and he finished far post. The build up for this goal was awesome, from back to front, with Knapp, Kalbaugh, Moore, and Medley all touching the ball before Shaw netted the goal. After the prolonged lightning delay, Tim Griffin scored his second of the night on a beautiful open field assist from Matt Medley leaving Tim with one unlucky defender to beat. Tim then struck the ball hard, driving it off the keeper and into the goal for a 5-0 Parkview lead. Tim finished his second hat trick of the season with an unassisted goal and forty yard run for a 6-0 Parkview lead. Lebanon pulled one back in the 63rd minute when Grant #3 took a ball from Kyle #7 and finished far post. All the sophomores on the roster got in the game and Parkview had many opportunities to score in the second half. Jonathan Malter had one save in each half but was prevented the blank sheet when the defense broke down in front of him yielding the only goal.

Scoring Summary: Matt Medley (unassisted), Tim Griffin (assist by Darren Shaw), Matt Medley (unassisted), Darren Shaw (assist by Matt Medley), Tim Griffin (assist by Matt Medley), Tim Griffin (unassisted). Lebanon goal by Grant #3 (assist by Kyle #7).
