Vikings Beat Lakers 5-1

October 14th, 2008 by Florez 1 comment »

The Vikings played the Camdenton Lakers Tuesday night at home, winning the Ozark Conference match 5-1. The first goal of the match came when Leland Eckstam headed the ball over the top to Tim Griffin. Griffin was able to collect the ball quickly, take it to goal, and beat the keeper for the 1-0 lead. The match featured keeper Jon Malter back in goal after missing the last six games, which not only improved the defense, but also allowed the Vikings to push backup keeper Rudy Fotsch into the forward spot, where he earned two goals on the night. Fotsch’s first goal came when Tim Griffin played him a ball through the defense that he was able to hammer home for a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Opening the second half the Vikings quickly increased their offensive domination by taking the ball to the goal right away. Fotsch flicked a beautiful header over the top to Griffin that put Griffin in the box with one man to beat. The defender dragged Griffin down in the box, earning him a red card and giving Griffin a PK opportunity that he put away for the 3 goal lead. After giving up a goal that Camdenton player Jeff Moffitt finished nicely, the Vikings came right back after Leland Eckstam earned his second assist on the night with deep ball to Fotsch, who was able to settle the ball in the box with his right foot and then left foot drill the shot upper ninety into the back of the net. The final goal of the match came when Morgan Holt played a 40 yard ball over the top to Griffin, who was able to go quickly to goal and again finish nicely, giving him a hat-trick and a four goal lead at 5-1. The win pushes Parkview up to 4-4 in the Conference, and 13-5 overall.

Scoring summary:
PHS- Tim Griffin (3G, 1A) Rudy Fotsch (2G) Leland Eckstam (2A) Morgan Holt (1A)

The Junior Varsity Vikings played through the rain during the second match of the night. Parkview game up a goal early when a shot slipped in under keeper Evin Barber’s hands on the wet grass. The Vikings rallied though, and scored in the second half when Jordan Houseman played the ball to Brian Otradovec, then got the ball right back on a nicely worked give-and-go. Houseman found himself in the box and was able to slot the ball in low corner for the 1-1 tie. Both teams earned some opportunities in the second half, but Blake White and Shane Maloney held down the defense along with Evin Barber in goal. The Vikings were able to get one more of their own, although Tanner Bennett and Brian Otradovec earned themselves a few more nice looks on goal.

The Vikings play next on Thursday at Neosho. JV kicks off at 5:30, varsity to follow at about 7:00.

Vikings Take Second in KHS Shootout

October 11th, 2008 by Florez No comments »

The Parkview Vikings took second place in the Kickapoo Shoutout Tournament on Saturday. After beating Rockwood Summitt in the second round game 2-1 (OT), Parkview lost 2-1 to #21 state ranked Eureka in the Championship match.

The second match of the Kickapoo Shootout was an intense game. Rockwood Summitt started fast and controlled much of the first half in the midfield. In the 20th minute of the match on a corner kick a Rockwood Summitt player made a beautiful backward deflected header into the side netting of the goal – no chance for keeper Rudy Fotsch, putting the Vikings down 0-1. Parkview fought back right away, and due some great individual work by Matt Medley leveled the score in the 38th minute. Medley beat two defenders who were tugging his jersey and made it to the touchline. He turned and sent the ball just wide of the keeper across the face of the goal and Tim Griffin tipped it in for the tie. The game remained 1-1 throughout the second half, with both teams hitting the crossbar. Rudy Fotsch came up with six excellent saves and the game went to overtime. The Vikings ended it quickly, in the 87th minute, when Matt Medley headed a ball to Tim Griffin. Griffin deftly touched it by one defender, turned with speed, and beat the keeper for the golden goal victory. It was fantastic match and gave the Vikings their 12th win of the season.

Scoring Summary: Tim Griffin (assist by Matt Medley), Tim Griffin (unassisted)

The Championship match was between Parkview and Eureka, which was the third game of the weekend for both teams. With Eureka well rested coming off a 4-0 win, and Parkview tired from a 2-1 overtime victory, the Vikings looked a bit flat to begin the match. The score was 0-0 at halftime thanks to solid defense and goalkeeping, but in the second half the Vikings got on the board with about 20 minutes left in the match when Tim Griffin beat the keeper for his fourth goal of the tournament and a 1-0 lead. The Vikings controlled the majority of the second half with hard work and smart passing, but gave up goals in the 74th and 76th minute to lose and take second place in the tournament.

Scoring Summary: Tim Griffin (unassisted)

Vikings Top Liberty in Round One of KHS Tourney

October 10th, 2008 by Florez No comments »

The Vikings defeated the Liberty Blue Jays on Friday night 2-1. The Parkview boys fought hard to move on through the first round of the Kickapoo Shootout Tournament, getting their first goal of the night from Tim Griffin. After the Blue Jays had out-possessed the Vikings in the first few minutes of the match, Matt Medley won a hard tackle at midfield and played a beautiful ball over and through to Griffin. Griffin was able to dribble right at the defender and beat him as he took it into the box himself, beating the keeper with a tap from the outside of his right foot into the lower right side of the netting. The second goal of the match came in the first half as well, when off of a cross Morgan Holt won the ball in the box and laid it off for an oncoming Matt Medley, who finished strong from inside the eighteen. The Vikings gave up a goal halfway through the second half, but overall had the edge on possession, shots on goal, and most importantly: goals scored.

Scoring summary: Goals by Tim Griffin and Matt Medley (assisted by Morgan Holt)

Next game: Saturday 10/11/08 10:00 a.m. at Kickapoo against Rockwood Summitt (who beat Nixa 2-0)
