JV Tournament Bracket Announced…

October 12th, 2010

REVISED SCHEDULE: The head coaches agreed that only the teams qualifying for the championship will play in the third round of the tournament; therefore, the 3rd place and 5th place matches on the original bracket have been removed. The tournament championship match will still take place 2:30 PM at JFK Stadium.

The Vikings are proud to host the 2010 Parkview JV Tournament Oct 22-23. We view this event as the de-facto regional junior varsity championship for the greater Springfield area, and we hope it remains a staple of the local soccer scene for years to come.

Participating teams include Catholic, Glendale, Kickapoo, Nixa, Ozark and Parkview high schools. The coaches of each program compared their records and results and then voted for each team’s seed in the tournament. Kickapoo was the unanimous choice for first seed.

Friday games will be played at Kickapoo High School, and all Saturday games will be played at Parkview High School.

The bracket can be seen using the link below:

Vikings Shut Out

October 8th, 2010

Rock Bridge (14-4 and ranked 13th in the state) controlled the game from the beginning, and prevailed 7-0 when the buzzer sounded.  Parkview’s leading scorer, Brian Otradovec, did not play due to injury, and he was missed up front.   The Vikings hope to rebound Saturday in an 8:00 a.m. game against Greenwood which lost a close game to Waynesville, 2-1.

Kickapoo Shootout Update

October 7th, 2010

Linked below is our bracket for the Kickapoo tournament this weekend. Our first game versus Rock Bridge will be 6 PM Friday at JFK Stadium. After that, times and locations will vary depending on the outcome of our games from one round to the next.

In the second round, we will play either Waynesville or Greenwood. Both games would be intriguing in their own way. The rematch versus Waynesville would shed light on our biggest concern: consistency. Can we beat a good team twice in the same season? On the other hand, Parkview has not played Greenwood at the varsity level since 2003. Facing the school that is geographically closest to the Parkview campus and eager to collect a win against a class-3 school would make the Greenwood game doubly challenging.

The other half of the bracket includes Carthage, Smith-Cotton, Kearney, and Republic. Parkview will play one of them in the last round of the tournament.

Parkview lost to Carthage, 4-1, in its first game of the season, giving up two goals in the last three minutes of the game. The rematch would allow Parkview to measure growth from earlier in the year.

Parkview last faced Smith-Cotton at the 2007 Helias tournament, with Parkview claiming the 1-0 victory.

Parkview has never played Kearney, although Kearney has participated in the Parkview tournament each of the last four years. Kearney lost  to Carthage , 1-0 in overtime, at this year’s Viking Showdown. The result, however, was controversial. Many observers stated that an apparent Kearney goal in regulation was not awarded after the shot had crossed the goal line but then took a weird ricochet off the wheel of the goal post. The ball bounced back out into the field of play, and the officials declared, “Play on!”

Republic is in its first year of competition, so a match-up with them would also be Parkview’s first in its history.

Lackluster Play Dooms Vikings

September 30th, 2010

The Joplin Eagles swept Parkview Thursday night 4-1 (Varsity) and 3-1(junior varsity).  Brian Otradovec beat 2 defenders to score on a run-out five minutes into the game, however, the Eagles dominated possession the remainder of the half and led 2-1 at the break.  The Eagles scored two quick goals to start the second half as the defense seemed to break down at critical times.  It was not until Clint inserted several of the swing players into the game with about 20 minutes to go that the Vikings appeared to have any energy.   The Vikings missed the presence of senior Tanner Bennett who was unavailable because of injury.

Vikings fall hard at Kickapoo

September 22nd, 2010

The Parkview boys’ soccer teams lost at Kickapoo last night–varsity by 6-0 and JV by 3-0. The varsity game will bewilder Parkview fans for the next few days, but let us not linger too long.

We turn certain teams into psychological opponents rather than real-life ones on the field.

After an initial period of awkward soccer to start the first half, the boys calmed their nerves and played solidly, holding possession and pressing the Kickapoo backline much of the first half. The players’ nerves resurfaced, however, late in the first half, and Kickapoo was gifted its first goal. An ill-timed rebound from goalkeeper Evin Barber was left in front of the net, and the Parkview defense’s inability to clear the ball from its penalty area gave Kickapoo a second and third chance to knock the ball over the line. Note: the ball never touched the net, as Barber swatted the ball out of the goal mouth; the officials, however, believed the ball had crossed the line, so the goal was awarded.

The second half resumed in much the same manner, with Parkview’s first touch lacking finesse and its clearances lacking sufficient height and distance to move the game far from the Parkview penalty area.

The Kickapoo psychosis is a vague but ever-present threat that resides deep in the minds of all Parkview athletes. » Read more: Vikings fall hard at Kickapoo

Viking Showdown Champions!

September 18th, 2010

The 2010 Viking Showdown Tournament Champions. Because the Parkview JV team had to fill the open slot in the bracket, the Parkview varsity team only carried three subs the entire tournament.

Parkview captured the championship of the Viking Showdown on Saturday with a 4-2 win over a very strong Farmington team which had defeated Carthage in overtime to advance to the finals. The Vikings turned in their best effort of the year and truly achieved a team victory.  Brian Otradovec opened the scoring with 24 minutes left in the first half on an assist from Tanner Bennett.  After Farmington tied the score, Otradovec was taken down inside the box and converted the penalty kick for a 2-1 advantage at halftime.  Parkview extended their lead to 3-1 on a perfect corner kick from Jordan Houseman to Louis Taylor (see video below.).  The score went to 4-1 when Otradovec drove the goal and got off a strong shot which bounced off the Farmington goalie to Bennett who pounded it home.  Parkview held on for a final 4-2 win on the spectacular play of keeper Evin Barber who made save after save down the stretch.

Earlier in the day, Parkview defeated West Plains 2-1 to make the finals.  Otradovec scored both goals, the first on the best single shot of the year from more than 30 yards out, the second on a nice assist from Alex Blanco.  Parkview led almost the entire game until West Plains tied it late in the second half.  Undaunted, Parkview fought back to get the winning goal with less than 3 minutes to go in the game.

The junior varsity finished the tournament 0-3, losing to Fulton 10-0 and Neosho 3-0.  Third place went to Carthage which defeated West Plains 9-1.  The next games are Tuesday night at Kickapoo.  Let’s have a great crowd to support the boys and run the winning steak to four!

Vikings Beat Crocker on Bogue Header

September 10th, 2010

Parkview rallied from one goal down to beat a strong Crocker team at JFK stadium on Friday night in front of an enthusiastic crowd.  After giving up an early goal on a defensive mistake five minutes into the game, Brian Otradovec tied the score late in the first half on a penalty kick.  Jim Smart had threaded the ball through to Otradovec for an open look when he was taken down inside the box.  It was Otradovec’s fourth goal in as many games. Parkview dominated possession in the second half and finally scored with about four minutes left in the game.  Jordan Houseman lofted a perfect corner kick to the far side of the goal and Bogue knocked it in.  Bogue had just made an ironman play by stopping a Crocker drive and hitting the ground face first.  He never left the game and within minutes scored his first goal of the season. The junior varsity prevailed 3-0 with goals by Louis Taylor, Shane Maloney, and Alex Holden.  Both squads are now 2-2 for the season.
