The Vikings finished the season 18-8, their highest win total since the 2005 season. Parkview will graduate 10 seniors (8 starters); Leland Eckstam, Rudy Fotsch, Tim Griffin, Justin Hansen, Morgen Holt, Trey Kalbaugh, Kyle Kutz, Vance Marlow, Matt Medley, and Darren Shaw. The Varsity Boys Soccer team not only topped the last few years win total, but also has a nonweighted team GPA of 3.51. This group of seniors has truly left their mark on Parkview, not only by breaking records, but also by setting a great example of what hard work and a good attitude can accomplish.
Senior captain Tim Griffin is now the all time PHS goal scorer (93), holding the single season record (37) and overall points records as well. Griffin, Eckstam, Kalbaugh, Kutz, Medley, and Shaw are all 3 year Varsity players, and all were returning starters from last year.

The Junior Varsity Vikings finished the season 8-5-3, improving from last year’s 5-10-1 record. The JV was led by returning starters Jordan Houseman, Tanner Bennett, Alex Blanco, Jim Smart, and Blake White, who are all sophomores. Freshmen Brian Otradovec, Shane Maloney, Evin Barber, and Shane Landon helped bring a winning atmosphere to the JV by filling holes in the team both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
With the Varsity squad losing 10 seniors (8 starters) going into next season, look for many of the key JV contributers from this season to show up on the Varsity squad next year. The leadership of the sophomores already named, as well as Christian Weaver, Chris Lawson, Travis Dillard and others were an essential factor in the JV’s success this year, and these individuals will be leaned heavily upon next year to contribute on the Varsity level. This year’s freshmen group will look to fill holes in the PHS lineup next year as well, some as JV starters and others as sophomore Varsity hopefuls. With a schedule that has gotten more and more competitive in recent years, Coach Josh Hokanson had the JV boys prepared and ready to go on a nightly basis. Well done guys!

The Parkview Viking soccer team’s season came to an end on Tuesday night, losing to the Glendale Falcons 3-0 in the District 11 Class 3 semi-finals. The Vikings were ranked #3 in District 11, and the Falcons were ranked #2. Glendale beat Parkview 1-0 in the first game of the season this year, and will face Kickapoo in the finals on Thursday night which will be played at 7:00 p.m. on Cooper #1 (LCYS).
Parkview out-possessed the Falcons for the first 15 minutes of the match, but was unable to get any clear goal-scoring opportunities. The combination of Matt Medley, Leland Eckstam, and Jared Moore worked well possession-wise for the Vikings from a passing standpoint, as the Vikings worked the ball around the field and controlled the tempo early. Glendale got their offense going in the second 20 minutes, including netting one goal before halftime on a ball played through the defense. The second half found Glendale coming out strong, getting a 2-0 lead, and keeping the majority of possession. Junior goalkeeper Jon Malter was able to keep Parkview in the game with a few beautiful saves, notably one a line-drive shot from inside the six that Malter dove on and somehow covered up. The Vikings took a risk trying to get more offensive with about 20 minutes left, adjusting their formation by relying on the defense to cover more ground and pushing senior Morgen Holt into the offensive mix as a third forward. The move paid off in offensive attempts, but not in goals, as Holt had a beautiful header late in the match that went just wide, as well as a few nice shot opportunities. Seniors Tim Griffin and Rudy Fotsch put pressure on Falcon defenders, but were also unable to slot anything by the keeper.

First Round
The Parkview Vikings topped the Branson Pirates in the First Round District 11 Class 3 Tournament on Monday night, which puts their overall record at 18-7. The win was COACH CLINT NURNBERG’S 200th career high school coaching win, and featured senior captain Tim Griffin netting two record breaking goals as well. The Vikings’ first goal came from senior Leland Eckstam on a brilliant free kick from 35 yards out, putting the Vikings up 1-0 in the 8th minute of the match. Eight minutes later Morgan Holt struck a laser on a ball he received from Tim Griffin, beating the keeper near post for the 2-0 lead. In the 29th minute TIM GRIFFIN took sole possession of the PHS All-Time Career goal and points mark when he received a pass from Jared Moore and slotted it calmly far post for his 92nd career goal. Both both the goals and points records were held by Patrick Carver. Just 9 minutes later Matt Medley and Tim Griffin played a phenomenal give and go at the top of the box and Matt scored to make it a 4-0 halftime lead. In the 55th minute Tim Griffin broke the single season record with his 37th on a pass from Leland Eckstam that he struck to the far post side netting (also previously a Carver record). The final goal of the match came in the 78th minute when Trey Kalbaugh (normally a defender, but playing some outside mid) received a ball from Jared Moore and finished with a nice low strike to the near post for a 6-0 score. The Viking defense kept Branson from building much of an attack throughout the game, although Jonathan Malter did have to make a tough late save or two in order to preserve the shutout. Vikings advanced to second round play with their 6-0 victory.
The Vikings will play again on Tuesday night (So VOTE early). Parkview will face off against Glendale for the first time since the opening match of the season. The District 11 Class 3 semifinal game will be played at 7:00 on Kickapoo’s field.

The Ozark Tigers beat the Nixa Eagles 3-2 in a hard fought battle. The early match in Class 3 District 11 play, Ozark pressured right off the first whistle, but was unable to finish. After a foul was called against Ozark about 25 yards out on the left side of their box, Kaleb Romero put the set piece far post upper 90 for a 1-0 Nixa lead. The answering goal came from Ozark’s Skyler Foster as he found a ball loose in the box and stuck it in the back of the net to tie the game up at 1-1. An Ozark player crossed the ball from the left corner that keeper Marcus Fernandes got a hand on but was unable to do anything with, and junior Seth Hampton cleaned up the trash to put Ozark up 2-1. Less than 2 minutes later TJ Miner crossed a ball from the right side and directly to the feet of Hampton, who one touched the shot for his second goal in 100 seconds, and a 3-1 lead. Late in the match sophomore Weston Hanger scored for Nixa, to bring the score to 3-2, but the score stayed put after that, advancing Ozark to a 5:00 matchup against Kickapoo on Tuesday night.

The Vikings open the District 11 Tournament against Branson on Monday night. The match will be played at 7:00, following the 5:00 Nixa vs. Ozark match at Kickapoo. For Branson, the 6th seed in the District 11 tournament, this marks the first year of high school soccer.
Parkview enters this match with some numbers on the line as well. Coach Clint Nurnberg has 199 total wins as a high school coach at Parkview (both guys and girls combined), which means a win Monday would put him at an even 200. Also Tim Griffin currently has 91 career PHS goals, tied with Patrick Carver for the PHS career goal record. Carver’s single season scoring record is at 36, a number Griffin is currently only one behind at 35 for 2008.
If the Vikings earn the victory on Monday night then they would play again on Tuesday night against Glendale, the 2nd seed of the tournament. The Tuesday night match would be at 7:00 p.m. on the Kickapoo soccer field.
By the way, the pre-district tournament offensive statistics have been collected for soccer in the Southwest Region. At a quick glance I saw a handful of Parkview boys on the list, including Tim Griffin, Matt Medley, Morgan Holt, and Jared Moore (I’m not the one who chose to only post offensive stats, so please don’t shoot the messenger).
After coming out a bit flat against Helias in Jefferson City, the Vikings gave up the first goal of the match to go down 0-1. Jon Malter made a ridiculous save in the first half that kept Helias from netting there second goal when he jumped up and backwards as he punched a ball over the crossbar. The Vikings got on the scoreboard in the first half when Dane Knapp played a set-piece from midfield over the top of the Helias defense, for Tim Griffin. Griffin was able to run onto the long-ball and strike it past the keeper for the 1-1 tie. The second goal of the match came from a corner kick when Leland Eckstam hit a “black hole” ball that Morgan Holt was able to get a leg on for the eventual game winner in the 2-1 victory.
Griffin’s goal was his 35th of the season, and his 91st career goal. He is now tied with Patrick Carver in PHS career goals at 91, and is one short of tying the single season PHS scoring record which Carver also holds at 36.

The Vikings play next in the District Tournament on Monday night (11/3/08). The match is against Branson at Kickapoo, and will be played at 7:00. Parkview is the 3rd seed in the District 11 Tournament, and Branson is 6th. If the Vikings win on Monday night then they would play again on Tuesday night against #2 seeded Glendale (also 7:00 at Kickapoo).
