Boys Season Begins

August 11th, 2008

The boys soccer season officially began today with morning practice at 8:30 a.m. Practice Schedule.

Pictured, Tim Griffin (senior), is one of 11 seniors on the Vikings roster. The Vikings will look to build on last year’s 17-7-1 record, and second place finish in the District Tournament. Griffin was a Class 3 Southwest All-Region player and All District 12 Team player in 2007. Other returning award winners from last year include fellow All District 12 first teamer Kyle Kutz (senior), All District 12 second teamer Matt Medley (senior), and All District 12 Honorable Mentions Darren Shaw (senior) and Jared Moore (junior).

The Vikings will be playing their first year in Class 3 District 11 against Kickapoo, Glendale, Nixa, Ozark, and Branson. The team is also a member of the Ozark Conference that includes Kickapoo, Joplin, Hillcrest, Glendale, Lebanon, Waynesville, Rolla, West Plains and Camdenton.

If you or someone you know would like to help with one of the many team, field, or other related tasks that need to be done during the season, please contact the booster club or the website. The Booster Club is made up of boys’ soccer parents, and they are responsible for many team needs, including: field maintenance and clean up, running the concession stand during the games, purchasing items for the teams (like nets, meals, etc.), and ordering player uniforms.

The first game of the season will be September 2nd at Glendale. The Junior Varsity squad will kick off at 5:00 p.m., with the Varsity to follow. Entire Fall schedule.

Copies of the physical forms can be found on the Forms page.

Booster Club Letter #1

June 30th, 2008

All:

Below is information on a few things happening in the upcoming weeks – we will put together a newsletter and get it out sometime next week for other important dates. However, the website www.soccerphs.com has all the dates for the summer listed as well as the tentitive schedule for the upcoming season (look on the left under pages).

1. Drury Soccer Camp – July 28-31 – Registation form can be found here or at the Summer Camp: Drury link.

2. Remember the Thursday night kick-arounds (6:30-8:00 PM @ JFK and/or PHS Soccer Field) (from Coach: “We’ve have respectable turnouts each time so far, but I expect more people to start showing up as we move into July.”)

3. Kid’s Camp – August 4,5,6 – Attached is the flyer – PLEASE remember Coach is requiring each boy to recruit at least 2 people or they owe him some volunteer time at the field. But please realize that this is our primary fundraiser that pays for the boys travel (hotel rooms, special bus service, meals, snacks, drinks, etc) we were very short last year and not having a good turn out this year could possibly jeapordize travel or other things that we provide for the team.

The website is updated frequently – please check for date changes, forms, etc.

Southwest All-Star Game Thursday June 26th

June 18th, 2008

“I hope you will join us on Thursday for our 4th annual game. This has been a 10 month process, culminating in the final high school game for the Class of 2008. Jeremy, Zack and I have spent a significant amount of time over the past month in final preparations. Your support for the players and the event is an important part of growing the soccer community in the region. We’ve got over 50 high school teams in the region and I’d like to believe we can outdraw the football and basketball crowds I’ve seen at their recent All-Star events.” -www.sgfsoccer.com

Parkview has Emmy Dale and Kristine Malter on the All-Star squad on the girls side, and Will Griffin and Matt Beckett on the boys side.

Griffin, Medley, SSC U17′s Win State Cup

May 11th, 2008

For the second year in a row, the U17 Springfield Soccer Club squad has won 1st place in State Cup. The U17 SSC squad is made up of boys from multiple area high schools, and Parkview is well represented by juniors Tim Griffin and Matt Medley. The same squad won State Cup last year as U16′s, and defended their title by beating the St. Louis squad Scott Gallagher. Both Griffin and Medley have started for Parkview since their sophomore years, and will be seniors in the fall.

PHS Boys Soccer Booster Club Newsletter
January 2008

It might be cold outside, but it’s already time to think about 2008 PHS BOYS SOCCER! Coach Nurnberg has asked me to pass on several items that will be coming up in the near future – he has a short meeting scheduled today after school with the boys, but we would like to provide the parents with the information also “just in case it doesn’t get home”!

• Off-Season Conditioning – Now that the second semester is off the ground, coach Nurnberg would like to encourage players to attend conditioning practices on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Sessions start at 3:10 PM and conclude by 4:30 PM. These sessions are optional but strongly encouraged. Players will complete upper- and lower-body workouts in the weight room, follow a running regimen, and develop technical soccer skills through individual and small-group drills.
• Spring Outdoor/Summer Outdoor League – Coach would like to get a team together to play in the spring league at Lake Country, if we could get a parent to coordinate the putting the team together for those wanting to play we would appreciate it. A team of 16 is desired the cost will be approximately $60-$65 per player. Please contact coach for more information at jnurnberg@spsmail.org or 523-9455

• Missouri State Soccer Camp (July 22-25, 2008) Please let Coach Nurnberg know ASAP if your son is OR is not planning to attend he would like to have two teams this year at camp and use this as a great start to the 2008 season – you can find more information at www.msusoccer.com the fee is $295 for commuter.
o From Coach “Team camp has been a huge asset in our preparations the past four years, correlating strongly with our run of district final appearances. The fact that we only took one team last summer (essentially leaving out many JV players) is worth noting; the JV team demonstrated the same successful trend as the varsity team the years they attended team camp. Nothing is more informative for our team’s tactical development, or our players’ fitness levels, than playing competitive matches against other schools prior to the start of the season. We get at least four extra games to iron out our line-up and to start building up our chemistry, but we can only do that if players make it a priority.
I would like to encourage EVERY boy in our program to attend so I can register us for two teams. To help me determine the number of boys who intend to participate, I would like parents to notify me of their plans that week as soon as possible. Parents should indicate either “Plans to attend” or “Plans NOT to attend”. My email is: jnurnberg@spsmail.org – Parents can also call my classroom at 523-9455.

• Kid’s Camp to be held August 4th – 6th, 2008 – Please put this date on your calendar, this is a VERY important fundraiser for our program and we need everyone’s help to make this successful. We did not have the attendance that we normally have last year and as a result do not have the same “cushion” to provide for our season needs this upcoming year. We will be getting an email together soon that we hope you will send out to every Pre-K thru 8th grade student that you know to “hold the date” and attend our camp. The success of this camp determines the need for additional fundraisers and also determine the trips and what extras we can provide for our players (hotel rooms, special trips, Gatorade, bus food, warm ups for new players, trophies, senior plaques, etc.)

• Official High School Practice will begin on Monday, August 11, 2008
• Springfield Public Schools 1st Day of School starts Monday, August 25, 2008
• 1st game will be sometime during the week of September 2, 2008.

If you know of any incoming 2008 freshman that will be playing in the fall, please provide the parents with our email address so we can add them to our newsletter distribution list.

The PHS Boys Booster Club will begin having meetings in April to plan for the upcoming season, please plan to attend!
