The boys partook in the annual ritual of Bombardment yesterday, and much pain and pleasure did they inflict and receive as the hour-and-a-half battle ensued.

The Parkview boys soccer program has played Bombardment for each of the past 11 seasons. It’s a combination of dodgeball, soccer, and American Gladiators.

“Bombardment is not just a game to us; it’s a way of life,” senior captain Jim Smart said. “My sense of morality and social justice was formed by playing this game.”

The rules are not simple and regularly shift as each battle unfolds. In the game, two teams square off, each from their own side of the field. They pummel one another with soccer balls, attempting to knock the other team’s players out by striking them with the ball without the ball first touching the ground. If the intended victim catches the ball, the would-be attacker sits out instead. Each sidelined player must stay behind his own goal and may not launch any attacks; they are allowed to shag balls for the still-active teammates. Sidelined players can be reactivated, however, if their active teammates hit the opponent’s crossbar. A team can win the game by knocking out all of their opponents.

The game allows for another route to victory: knocking over all of the other team’s four cones. Once knocked over–even due to an accidental step by one of the own team’s players–a cone may not be set back up. The cones are placed about five yards in front each team’s goal, and the goals are placed about 20 yards from the midfield line. Â Teams often assign defensive duties for the protection of the cones while the battle rages on. The cones offer one other twist, in that all sidelined players are reactivated when one of the other team’s cones go down.

Freshman Joseph Fairchild laughs as his team launches the dreaded “angry bear” attack on senior Jim Smart.

“I kicked over one of my team’s cones on accident,” said sophomore T.J. Joy, “so I felt mean the rest of the day. I mean, I really let my team down, man!”

This year’s episode was well played by all. I believe, for the first time in years, that all players tasted victory in at least one of the rounds. The traditional pairing sets the freshmen and sophomores versus the juniors and seniors, and then after a few rounds the teams reorganize into freshmen and seniors versus the sophomores and juniors.

The Alumni Game Committee is currently considering a proposal to play Bombardment at next August’s alumni game.

“I think we’ve got the votes to get it pushed through,” Alumni Admiral Joe Florez said.

Hearts were moved, tears were shed, and stomachs were turned. Ah, the tradition of alumni soccer continued once again at the Parkview soccer field Thursday night.

Fifteen Parkview alumni soccer players took part in the charity event, designed to raise money for coach Nurnberg’s pet philanthropy: snails that have no shells.

“I think it’s sad that people look down on so-called ‘slugs,’” Nurnberg said. “Put a shiny shell on the little guys, and man… suddenly they’re cute!”

A little less than $1 was raised.

Alumnus Matt Medley discovered Big Foot living in the woods behind the home team's bench. "I love nature," Medley said.

“Medley found some change in the parking lot, and I took it from his shoe while he was playing,” Nurnberg said.

Still, the game did raise a lot of questions for the Parkview program as it enters the 2010 season:

Sophomores TJ Joy and John Bogue make the rest of the alumni game participants feel awkward.

Will sophomores TJ Joy and John Bogue be able to form an effective partnership? Photographic evidence suggests the two may not be on the same page.

Does the Parkview soccer field have adequate security patrolling the neighborhood? A rash of troublesome break-ins by area youths suggests this problem has not yet been fully solved. Senior Mackenzie Payton, who has volunteered to provide extra surveillance for the time being, attended the game in full police uniform as a show of our strength for the aggressive North Koreans. “The best defense is a good offense,” Payton sagely said.

Senior Mackenzie Payton swears she'll catch them varmits that's done damaged the shed. "Yee-hawww!" Payton said.

Are Morgen and Vance really college material? It’s really hard to say. On the one hand, they successfully executed the secret Drury hand shake (see photo). However, when asked what degree they both were pursuing, each responded, “Ninety eight point eight, or so.” Thus, the jury is still out.

Alumni Vance Marlow and Morgen Holt sit on the Parkview bench during the alumni game. "This brought back a lot of memories," the two sang simultaneously in perfect harmony.

Will Nurnberg lose more hair? “It all depends on how well we defend this year,” Nurnberg said. “Either way, I’ll probably start wearing more hats.”

This is an artist's rendition of Nurnberg's hairline two and a half months from now. The good news, according to many physicists and theologians, is that the future is not yet determined. In fact, Nurnberg could even regain active hair follicles should things go well.
