Lackluster Play Dooms Vikings

The Joplin Eagles swept Parkview Thursday night 4-1 (Varsity) and 3-1(junior varsity).  Brian Otradovec beat 2 defenders to score on a run-out five minutes into the game, however, the Eagles dominated possession the remainder of the half and led 2-1 at the break.  The Eagles scored two quick goals to start the second half as the defense seemed to break down at critical times.  It was not until Clint inserted several of the swing players into the game with about 20 minutes to go that the Vikings appeared to have any energy.   The Vikings missed the presence of senior Tanner Bennett who was unavailable because of injury.

Vikings Tame Tigers

Using a reshuffled lineup Tuesday at JFK, Parkview beat Waynesville 3-1 in a strong effort. Tanner Bennett started the scoring in the first half, but Waynesville came back to tie when a ball twice was not cleared from in front of the net.  In the second half, Brian Otradovec and Blake White each scored.  The White goal came after Otradovec was taken down right outside the box.  Otradovec put a strong shot on goal which the keeper deflected.  White was in position to pound it home, giving the Vikings the lead.  Otradovec scored the third goal, putting the game away.  Parkview’s offense has been helped by the move of White to the front line during the last two games, and  a defense composed of T.J Joy, Jon Bogue, Joe Fairchild, Louis Taylor and Austin Hess played solidly without him, particularly in the second half.  As always, Evin Barber made several good saves in the final ten minutes.

Parkview is now 7-5 on the year after splitting with Jackson and Cape over the weekend (Glendale did the same) and will face Joplin on the road Thursday night.  Joplin lost 2-1 to Camdenton last night and 2-0 to Glendale last week and will present a good challenge for the Vikings.  The junior varsity team lost 1-0 last night on a late goal.

Vikings fall hard at Kickapoo

The Parkview boys’ soccer teams lost at Kickapoo last night–varsity by 6-0 and JV by 3-0. The varsity game will bewilder Parkview fans for the next few days, but let us not linger too long.

We turn certain teams into psychological opponents rather than real-life ones on the field.

After an initial period of awkward soccer to start the first half, the boys calmed their nerves and played solidly, holding possession and pressing the Kickapoo backline much of the first half. The players’ nerves resurfaced, however, late in the first half, and Kickapoo was gifted its first goal. An ill-timed rebound from goalkeeper Evin Barber was left in front of the net, and the Parkview defense’s inability to clear the ball from its penalty area gave Kickapoo a second and third chance to knock the ball over the line. Note: the ball never touched the net, as Barber swatted the ball out of the goal mouth; the officials, however, believed the ball had crossed the line, so the goal was awarded.

The second half resumed in much the same manner, with Parkview’s first touch lacking finesse and its clearances lacking sufficient height and distance to move the game far from the Parkview penalty area.

The Kickapoo psychosis is a vague but ever-present threat that resides deep in the minds of all Parkview athletes. Continue reading

Viking Showdown Champions!

The 2010 Viking Showdown Tournament Champions. Because the Parkview JV team had to fill the open slot in the bracket, the Parkview varsity team only carried three subs the entire tournament.

Parkview captured the championship of the Viking Showdown on Saturday with a 4-2 win over a very strong Farmington team which had defeated Carthage in overtime to advance to the finals. The Vikings turned in their best effort of the year and truly achieved a team victory.  Brian Otradovec opened the scoring with 24 minutes left in the first half on an assist from Tanner Bennett.  After Farmington tied the score, Otradovec was taken down inside the box and converted the penalty kick for a 2-1 advantage at halftime.  Parkview extended their lead to 3-1 on a perfect corner kick from Jordan Houseman to Louis Taylor (see video below.).  The score went to 4-1 when Otradovec drove the goal and got off a strong shot which bounced off the Farmington goalie to Bennett who pounded it home.  Parkview held on for a final 4-2 win on the spectacular play of keeper Evin Barber who made save after save down the stretch.

Earlier in the day, Parkview defeated West Plains 2-1 to make the finals.  Otradovec scored both goals, the first on the best single shot of the year from more than 30 yards out, the second on a nice assist from Alex Blanco.  Parkview led almost the entire game until West Plains tied it late in the second half.  Undaunted, Parkview fought back to get the winning goal with less than 3 minutes to go in the game.

The junior varsity finished the tournament 0-3, losing to Fulton 10-0 and Neosho 3-0.  Third place went to Carthage which defeated West Plains 9-1.  The next games are Tuesday night at Kickapoo.  Let’s have a great crowd to support the boys and run the winning steak to four!

Viking Showdown results and schedule for Saturday

The Varsity prevailed over the Junior Varsity tonight by the score of 10-1. Scoring for the Varsity were Tanner Bennett (3), Jordan Houseman (2), Brian Otradovec (2), Louis Taylor, Jim Smart, and Joe Fairchild.  The two nicest goal were a result of great assists, one by Taylor to Bennett, and the second from Otradovec to Houseman to Bennett.  Diego Castillo got the goal for the JV on a put back when the ball rolled away from the keeper.

Other winners today were West Plains (2-0 over Fulton), Carthage (1-0 over Kearney), and Farmington (9-0 over Neosho).  The JV will play on the PHS grass field at 8:30 against Fulton to be followed by the Varsity game on the same field against West Plains.  There will be a great matchup at 10:30 on JFK between Carthage and Farmington.  Should the Varsity prevail over West Plains, the winner of that game will present the Vikings with quite a challenge.

Tournament Schedule Changes and Scouting

Parkview’s varsity and junior varsity are tenatively scheduled to play today @ 5:00 p.m. if PHS field conditions allow.  The winner will play at 10:30 a.m. Saturday while the loser will play at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.  Field assignments will depend upon field conditions–stay tuned.  Carthage and Kearney kick off the tournament at JFK at 3:15 p.m. today.  Carthage is probably the tournament favorite going into the event, having beaten Glendale 3-1 and Parkview 4-1 in both teams’ opening games.  Should Parview varsity advance, they will play the Fulton/West Plains winner.  Fulton is 3-2, having lost to common opponent Jeff City 1-0.  West Plains lost to Crocker whom the varsity defeated 2-1 last week.
