Parkview Beats Glendale 2-1

The Vikings played their Ozark Conference foe the Glendale Falcons to finish the KHS Tournament, and won 2-1. The match does not count as an Ozark Conference game, but is still a good barometer for where Parkview is at this point in the season.

After being stopped by the Glendale keeper on her first breakaway opportunity, Shelby Stewart found the same thing happening on try number two. Part two, however, found the blocked shot coming right back to Stewart, who hammered the ball into the corner netting for the 1-0 lead.

Melanie Allen got the second goal of the game for the Vikings, also coming in the first half. Allen played the ball to the far post from the right wing, and the keeper was only able to get fingertips on it before the ball found the back of the net, making the score 2-0. The Falcons were able to get one of their own in the second half, when Lindsey Sprouse put a shot just under the crossbar right over the leaping Caylin Manary, but Manary and the defense did not allow an equalizer.

Parkview is now 8-2 on the season. The Vikings showed improvement in each of their three games in the KHS Shootout, despite going 1-2 overall. Both he midfield and defense showed drastic improvement this weekend, and the attack continues to efficiently finish it’s scoring opportunities.

Vikings Lose to Jackson, Play Glendale at 4:00pm

In the Vikings’ second match of the KHS Shootout, they lost to Jackson 0-2. Parkview played a defensively minded game, moving Mckenzi Payton to sweeper, and playing freshmen Aubrey Durst and Amy Greene at outside back positions. The defense gave up a goal early, but after one misplay the Vikings gave up only a couple scoring opportunities for the rest of the match.

Parkview again earned some scoring chances of their own, as Shelby Stewart continues to draw double and triple teams, allowing her to play great balls across the middle to Molly Robb, and Melanie Allen. The Vikings had two or three great scoring opportunities, against Jackson’s four or five, but possession was close to even with Jackson winning that battle about 60-40.

Jackson is undefeated on the season, and beat Glendale 3-1 on Friday. They lead the tournament in their division.

Vikings Lose First of Season to Rockbridge

In the Lady Vikings’ first match of the KHS Tournament, they lost their first match of the season to Rockbridge 0-3. Parkview’s record is now 7-1.

The Vikings went down 0-2 at half, and gave up a 3rd goal halfway through the second half. Parkview had it’s opportunities though, with Mckenzi Payton, Olivia Solari, and Molly Robb all getting great looks on goal. With a minute to go in the first half, Shelby Stewart crossed the ball directly in to Payton, who redirected the ball on goal from the six, but straight into the keeper. In the second half Stewart played the ball across the 18′ to Solari, who got a good look on goal. Molly Robb also had a nice effort in the second half, beating a defender with speed before having the ball poked away at the last second before being able to take advantage on a near 1 v. 1 opportunity.

Parkview may have lost their unbeaten record, but what they gained in this game is a high level of competition that helped push their team as a whole to the next level. The defense really picked up their game in the second half, with Amy Greene having an especially solid game in the back. The Vikings continue to play without forward Kelsey Loderhose, who is expected to return in the near future.

Parkview’s next two games will be on Saturday, the second half of the KHS Tournament. The Vikings will play Jackson at 9:45am, and Glendale at 4:00pm.

Vikings Top Joplin 4-0

The Lady Vikings played at Joplin on Tuesday, and won 4-0 . Parkview is now 3-0 in the Ozark Conference and 7-0 overall, their best start ever.

The Eagles battled in the first 5, but Anna Withers scored on a corner kick when the ball was cleared, but straight up the middle, 8 minutes in. Withers shot it from 25 out, and the keeper got her hands on the ball but could not keep it from crossing the line.

Jessica Maerz played Shelby Stewart a through ball that Stewart touched by a defender and finished with a couple minutes left in the first half. Maerz scored one of her own on an assist from Aubrey Durst for the 3-0 lead. Maerz assisted Stewart on the Vikings’ 4th and final goal, and Caylin Manary earned the shutout in front of the net.

The Viking’s speed up top continues to be complimented by a strong defense and goal keeping, which has helped earn 5 shutouts in 7 games, including shutout wins over Lebanon, Joplin and Nixa, among others. Parkview will not graduate a single back-line player next year, and the growth of freshmen Amy Greene and Aubrey Durst has helped them play well alongside juniors Holly Messick and Anna Withers.

The Vikings have been doing enough to win, but will have to step it up another notch if they want to be successful in the Kickapoo Tournament.

Off To Quite A Start: Vikings Now 6-0

The Lady Vikings beat Greenwood on Friday night, winning the match 4-1. According to Coach Nurnberg, this 6-0 record is the best start a Parkview Ladys’ team has had during his tenure, and possible ever.

Senior Jessica Maerz’s two long-range shots in the second half quelled a solid first-half performance from the Greenwood Bluejays. Parkview got first-half goals from junior Molly Robb and senior Shelby Stewart, but still found themselves chasing the ball at times due to effective ball movement through the Greenwood midfield. Greenwood senior Maddy Esther capitalized at the end of the first half, beating a Parkview defender at the top of the box and slotting her shot into the right side netting.
