Viking Season Summary

November 5th, 2009

The Vikings finished up their season with a record of 9-13, and a conference record of 3-6. In a season that could have been a rebuilding year considering the return of only starters Jared Moore, Dane Knapp, and Jonathan Malter, the Vikings were able to pick up some big wins and continue to build for the future.

Some of the most memorable wins of the season came against District 11 opponent the Nixa Eagles and Ozark Conference opponent the Waynesville Tigers. After losing to Waynesville during the regular season 0-1, the Vikings were rewarded with a rematch in the Kickapoo Shootout, which resulted in an exciting 4-4 match and a Viking win after shootouts.

Jared Moore led the Varsity offensively with 12 goals and 11 assists (35 points total), but sophomore Brian Otradovec was close behind with 14 goals and 3 assists (31 points total) of his own. 5 of the Vikings 9 wins were shutouts thanks mostly to the stellar play of keeper Jon Malter.

The Vikings say goodbye to seniors Dane Knapp, Jon Malter, Jared Moore, Sam Vigil, Michael Duff, Pedro Pitonez, Travis Dillard, Blaze Keith, and Kevin Daugherty. Parkview is projected to return 5 starters in 2010, including 7 seniors, 3 juniors, and 2 sophomores with Varsity experience.

From this year’s varsity squad, Parkview will return key pieces Brian Otradovec, Alex Blanco, Jordan Houseman, Tanner Bennett, Blake White, Jim Smart, Chris Lawson, and John Bogue. Others who earned Varsity experience in 2009 that will be expected to contribute heavily in 2010 include Evin Barber, Shane Maloney, TJ Joy, Juan Garcia and Austin Hess.

The Junior Varsity squad finished up 5-7 and gave up less than a goal per game. Keeper Evin Barber posted 4 shutouts and Pedro Pitonez led the team with 9 goals.

Vikings End Season Against Nixa

November 3rd, 2009

DSCI0680For much of the season the Vikings either put it together on the defensive end, or the offensive end, but rarely did we see both sides of the ball play as well as they did Monday night against Nixa. Even more rare: to play that well and lose. The Parkview boys defended very well throughout the match, and the offense created many opportunities to score, but when it came down to it the Vikings were unable to finish those opportunities and held to a 0-1 loss.

With Jon Malter in goal and Michael Duff combining with Sam Vigil to anchor the defense, Parkview limited the Eagle’s scoring opportunities for the majority of the match. Late in the first half on a corner kick, however, Nixa scored the only goal of the match by creating chaos inside the Viking penalty area on a play that the referee allowed to get quite physical. The Eagles pounced on the opportunity and punched it into the back of the net for the lead.

Dane Knapp and Alex Blanco helped control the mid-field for long stretches, while Jared Moore, Blake White, and others created scoring opportunities for Brian Otradovec and Tanner Bennett. The Vikings came close on many occasions, but could not get the equalizer.
