Carver, Emory End Season

November 23rd, 2008

Parkview Alumni Patrick Carver (PHS 2005) and his Emory teammates dropped their round of 16 match 2-0, ending not only a stellar season for Emory but Carver’s college career as well. Carver finishes his career at Emory as their #2 all time leading scorer. Carver has not only led Emory in goals and assists in each of the last two years, but he has also been named the University Athletic Association (UAA) “Player of the Year” as both a Junior and Senior.

I could be wrong, but it looks like you can watch of replay of Carver’s last match via the host team’s website. Check it out here.

Check out the other PHS Alumni as well.

Carver, Emory in Sweet 16 (DIII)

November 17th, 2008

After beating North Carolina Wesleyan College in shots from the mark, Patrick Carver (PHS 2005) and Emory University move on to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA DIII Tournament. Carver was the second Emory shooter, and the first to make for his team. Emory won the shootout 3-2.

Carver was picked as the UAA co-Player of the Year for the second straight season. He has started all 18 games for the Eagles, scoring 13 goals and adding 7 assists his senior year (33 points). Last year Carver tied the team single season (7) and broke the career record (13) for game-winning goals at Emory. He is currently tied for #2 in career EU goals (50), #5 in career assists with 29; and ranked #2 in career points at Emory (123).

The Eagles, ranked 4th nationally, will play next against Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA on Saturday, November 22.

Last year Parkview’s Josh Florez (PHS 2005) and the Wash U. Bears (St. Louis, Mo) won 16 games and advanced to the NCAA Sectional Finals.

He Teaches English, Not Math

November 17th, 2008

So apparently he’s a better coach than he is a mathematician. After further review of the numbers, Coach Nurnberg says that his initial addition was wrong, and his current win total stands at 189 (not 200 as previously reported). Oh well. I promise you that he’s amazing at spelling, grammar, and especially commas, parenthesis, and dashes.

Here’s to getting to 200 this Spring!

Varsity Season Summary

November 10th, 2008

The Vikings finished the season 18-8, their highest win total since the 2005 season. Parkview will graduate 10 seniors (8 starters); Leland Eckstam, Rudy Fotsch, Tim Griffin, Justin Hansen, Morgen Holt, Trey Kalbaugh, Kyle Kutz, Vance Marlow, Matt Medley, and Darren Shaw. The Varsity Boys Soccer team not only topped the last few years win total, but also has a nonweighted team GPA of 3.51. This group of seniors has truly left their mark on Parkview, not only by breaking records, but also by setting a great example of what hard work and a good attitude can accomplish.

Senior captain Tim Griffin is now the all time PHS goal scorer (93), holding the single season record (37) and overall points records as well. Griffin, Eckstam, Kalbaugh, Kutz, Medley, and Shaw are all 3 year Varsity players, and all were returning starters from last year.

JV Season Summary

November 5th, 2008

The Junior Varsity Vikings finished the season 8-5-3, improving from last year’s 5-10-1 record. The JV was led by returning starters Jordan Houseman, Tanner Bennett, Alex Blanco, Jim Smart, and Blake White, who are all sophomores. Freshmen Brian Otradovec, Shane Maloney, Evin Barber, and Shane Landon helped bring a winning atmosphere to the JV by filling holes in the team both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

With the Varsity squad losing 10 seniors (8 starters) going into next season, look for many of the key JV contributers from this season to show up on the Varsity squad next year. The leadership of the sophomores already named, as well as Christian Weaver, Chris Lawson, Travis Dillard and others were an essential factor in the JV’s success this year, and these individuals will be leaned heavily upon next year to contribute on the Varsity level. This year’s freshmen group will look to fill holes in the PHS lineup next year as well, some as JV starters and others as sophomore Varsity hopefuls. With a schedule that has gotten more and more competitive in recent years, Coach Josh Hokanson had the JV boys prepared and ready to go on a nightly basis. Well done guys!
