The Vikings looked a bit sluggish at the start of the match against Blue Valley Northwest, but defended well throughout. It was easy to see that they had made strides in their defensive tactics from the 8 p.m. game on Friday night to the Saturday afternoon match. Blue Valley Northwest, currently ranked #3 in the Kansas state rankings, scored first in the match. The goal came when a forward beat a Parkview defender before crossing the ball about seven yards out to an oncoming teammate who put away the goal for the 1-0 lead. The Vikings did not give up though, and after halftime they got a goal when Leland Eckstam hit a ball to Tim Griffin, who (injuries and all) headed the ball over the onrushing keeper to tie the match.
The Vikings, who were without starting midfielder Matt Medley, played well with Jared Moore in the center of the field and Rudy Fotsch up top in his place. Parkview team-defended very well for essentially the entire match, and the score was tied at 1-1 after 80 minutes of play. During the second overtime it was all about who could dig deep and find extra energy after both teams had played the night before, and Parkview was able to do just that when Jared Moore found the ball at his feet and Tim Griffin open with only one man to beat. The duo made magic happen with 3 minutes left when Moore played the ball perfectly in to Griffin, who took a touch by the defender and slotted the shot into the lower corner for the 2-1 golden goal victory. This marks Griffin’s second overtime goal of the season (2-0-0 in overtime), and 30th overall goal this year.
