Vikings Top Neosho In First Round of Districts

May 12th, 2008

The Parkview Vikings beat Neosho 3-1 on Monday night in the first round of the District 12 tournament. The Vikings’ first goal came on a nice through-ball pass from senior striker Emmy Dale to sophomore striker Shelby Stewart, who buried a low corner finish for the 1-0 lead. The second goal came again on an assist from Dale, this time to sophomore midfielder Jessica Maerz, who finished nicely to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead at half. After Neosho got a goal in the second half, the Vikings were able to answer with an unassisted goal by Shelby Stewart, making the final score 3-1.

In other tournament news, after a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation and overtime, the #3 seeded Joplin squad lost to the #6 seeded Nixa squad in shootouts. This puts Nixa, who had no wins in regular season district play, into the semi-finals against Kickapoo on Tuesday night.

Parkview will play against Ozark on Tuesday night for round two of the District 12 tournament. The Vikings play at 5:00, again at Joplin.

For the second year in a row, the U17 Springfield Soccer Club squad has won 1st place in State Cup. The same squad won State Cup last year as U16′s, and defended their title by beating the St. Louis squad Scott Gallagher. Both Griffin and Medley have started for Parkview since their sophomore years, and will be seniors in the fall.

Parkview Beats Willard, Finishes 10-9

May 8th, 2008

The Parkview Lady Vikings topped Willard on Thursday night 2-0. This was the last home match of the season, the Vikings last regular season performance, and Senior Night for Parkview. The Vikings seniors are Niki Cantrell, Stephanie Laney, Courtney Ash, Melissa Nieves, Kristine Malter, Betsy Fogle, and Emmy Dale. Dale scored the first goal of the match to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead that they took to halftime (assist by Shelbie Stewart). After the Senior Night festivities, the Vikings came out aggressive in the second half as well, picking up a goal by Jessica Maerz (assist by Emmy Dale). Sophomore keeper Caylin Manary earned the shutout in goal, her sixth of the season. Parkview drastically improves on last year’s 3-14 record by ending the regular season at 10-9, one game over the .500 mark.

The Junior Varsity squad faced Willard for the second time this season, tying the match 0-0. During the Ozark JV Tournament in the first week of the season, the Vikings lost to Willard 0-1. Neither team had a great number of chances to score, but the Vikings did have a few great opportunities that they were unable to finish. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie George earned the shutout, her fourth of the season. The Junior Varsity squad went undefeated in their last five games, going 2-0-3 in that span. During the five game stretch, the Vikings scored 10 goals and only gave up 2. This was the last match of the season for the Junior Varsity squad; their final record is 3-8-4.

The first District 12 Varsity match for Parkview is Monday night against Neosho. The game will be played in Joplin at 5:00 p.m. A win would put the Vikings into the semi-finals against Ozark on Tuesday.

Vikings Down Eagles In Overtime

May 6th, 2008

The Lady Vikings beat the Joplin Eagles on Tuesday night, 2-1 in overtime. Both goals came from sophomore striker Shelby Stewart (unassisted). Stewart’s first goal came midway through the first half, on a nice strike from outside the eighteen for a 1-0 lead. After the Eagles evened the score late in the second half, Stewart scored the game winner in overtime. Stewart’s second goal came as she beat a defender on the dribble and found the low corner of the netting for the 2-1 win.

The Junior Varsity squad tied Joplin 1-1. The score was 0-0 at the break, with freshmen striker Sarah Stutz holding down the defense by playing sweeper the entire match. In the second half, Parkview struck first with a goal by by freshmen Molly Robb (unassisted). Two Parkview injuries and two Joplin yellow-cards later, the Eagles were able to get the equalizer, leaving the final score 1-1.

Thursday is the last game of the regular season for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads. Thursday’s game is against Willard at JFK, and is senior night. Varsity will play first at 5:00p.m., with the JV squad to follow.

Vikings Lose To Tough Waynesville Squad; JV Ties

May 2nd, 2008

The Parkview Vikings Varsity squad went to Waynesville Thursday night to play probably the toughest team on their schedule. The Vikings, playing without Shelby Stewart or Melissa Nieves, gave up a goal in the first 2 minutes of play, and were never able to recover. Senior forward Katie Prichard scored four goals for Waynesville to lead the way.

The Junior Varsity squad had a better outcome than the Varsity, tying Waynesville 1-1. Parkview played a solid first 20 minutes or so before giving up a goal, and then finished up the first half playing very defensively the rest of the first half. The score was 1-0 Waynesville at the break, but the Vikings took the offensive in the second half, bringing the ball right at Waynesville’s goal repeatedly early on. After a shot by Lana Aberle that was cleared away, Sarah Stutz took a one touch shot from about twenty yards deep and buried it in the corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams got chances in the second half, but neither team was able to finish another opportunity. Freshmen defender Carsen Miller had an outstanding game on the back line, even running down a breakaway and saving a goal.

The Vikings next game is on the road at Joplin on Tuesday.
